The 'FLEX-STICK' is the creation of Randy Misenheimer, a career Physical Therapist. For the past 30 years, Randy has been investing in improving his patients’ well being. Randy is an accomplished physical therapist with a heart for helping people with rehabilitation of physical ailments and older adults. Randy has worked extensively in outpatient orthopedics, home health care, and skilled nursing facilities.
Over time, Randy became aware of the inherent instability of the traditional four-legged canes or quad canes, currently available. While recognizing the few practical benefits that such a broad base and free-standing cane provides, Randy combined his concern for his patients with his knowledge and experience and developed the concept of a flexible, multi-legged walking assistant. This new technology enhances the user's walking stability while reducing stress in the wrist, elbow, shoulder and back. The 'FLEX-STICK' enhances safety, stability and comfort while reducing fatigue. This is particularly important for those battling arthritis and osteoarthritis.
'FLEX-STICK' was developed through four years of research, engineering and collaboration with partners Misenheimer, Jamie Jordan (Industrial Engineering and Technical Marketing) and 3C Automation.
As soon as the handle on a quad cane tilts, one or more of the feet will lose contact with the ground surface and stability is compromised. Quad cane users are often frustrated with the 'wobble' feel they get as they try to walk 'normally'.
WIth the 'FLEX-STICK', some of the most uneven surfaces are made much easier to negotiate as the legs compensate and the springs act as shock absorbers, moving up and down to level out the ride, much the same way as an automobile handles bumps and pot holes. Standard walking canes with their single point of contact can slip on an uneven or rough surface putting the user at greater risk of losing balance and falling. With the 'FLEX-STICK's' tripod base design, the rubber footed legs tend to 'grab' the surface, similar to a grappling hook. The 'FLEX-STICK' can be used on rock or dirt roads, paths or trails to assist the user in waking safely with improved balance
